What We Do

Crabs are part of a vast group of aquatic arthropods called crustaceans. Maryland is known for having an abundant population of crabs, especially blue crabs, in the Chesapeake Bay. These blue crabs have become a significant part of our culture, but they serve a much greater purpose than simply being the star of a seafood boil.

Blue crabs are considered a keystone species because of their vital role in the ecosystem. They serve both as predators and prey, helping regulate the food web. They also feed on decaying fish and help remove debris from the seafloor, contributing to a healthier aquatic environment. Additionally, blue crabs are indicator species; their movements and behaviors help scientists monitor the health of the Chesapeake Bay and detect changes in water quality and habitat conditions.

Restorative Crabs was founded with the desire to clean and restore the streets and natural spaces of Maryland. Too often, people have become comfortable littering without considering the serious consequences this has for the environment we all share. Ultimately, we are temporary residents on this Earth, and we have a responsibility to protect and preserve the land so that future generations can experience the beauty of nature.

We strive to be like crabs on land. Removing what doesn’t belong, restoring balance, and caring for the environment. Our mission is to spread awareness within communities and bring new life to the abandoned and neglected areas of Maryland. In the end, we hope to inspire others to join our efforts in protecting this little piece of land we call home.
